Maybe try not nudging. Let him know he has to do it and it's every child's responsibility and then make him own it. Don't check in, don't peek...just tell him he's big now and doesn't need mommy's reminders anymore.

Personally, I wouldn't go that far. I think just making sure to keep the lines of communication open and talk about whatever is bothering your son is important. You can always pick up some kids' books that deal with losing a pet to initiate that.
