5 Playmats That Are Useful and Gorgeous!

By Nikki M

Finding a good playmat is a must when decorating the kids’ room. They’re versatile and useful for all ages – perfect for propping up your newborn during tummy time, or cushioning your tween’s knees while they spend months building a Rube Goldberg machine that may or may not work. Plus, like baby bedding and wallpaper, they’re an effortless way to freshen up your decor.

Here are our favorite mats to make playtime more comfortable:

Little Nomad

Remember those primary-colored ABC playmats your preschool used to have? These are just like that, only not hideous and tainted by early memories of being separated from mom.

Little Nomad collaborates with artists for beautiful hand-illustrated designs on their playmats. We adore the playful and intricate patterns on their Starlight Series mats, and if you like a more classic look that won’t clash with your decor, their Heirloom Collection is totally up your alley.

These mats are made with a non-toxic EVA foam, and are seamless, durable, and easily wipe clean.

Gathre

Gathre’s playmats are made with luxurious bonded leather, which is waterproof, stain-resistant, and oh-so-buttery. The bottom side of the mat is made with soft suede leather. They come in a variety of sizes, although you’ll probably get the most use out of the Midi and Maxi (which comes in circle and square). Colorwise, take your pick from their hip neutrals (like ecru, pewter and clay), or check out one of their collabs for fun prints (we love Mer Mag Maps, and Rylee + Cru’s Grids!)

Perfect for the beach, picnics, and anywhere you want to kick back and chill with your babe.

Grounded

When mom Linsey Smart had her son Jonah, she searched high and low for a playmat that both she and her baby would love. She wanted something comfortable, but pretty enough to leave out. And when she couldn’t find the perfect mat… she designed one herself!

Grounded multi-use play mats are the perfect balance between comfort and design. Baby will enjoy the soft-padding, while you appreciate the pretty prints (Cosmic and Boulder are our faves!) The front part of the mat is made with polyester, and the back is made with vegan leather. These mats can easily be spot cleaned, although you can machine wash them if needed.

The Pieces

Since having kids, there’s always the dilemma of choosing between things that are beautiful but impractical… and sensible but ugly as sin. Usually, ugly wins and I lose yet another part of my soul to “motherhood”.

The Pieces to the rescue! Their mats are made with XPE foam – a newer and safer alternative to EVA foam – and are BPA, phthalate, latex and formaldehyde-free. They’re antimicrobial and hypoallergenic, as well as odourless as well as shock and noise-absorbing.

The best part? They’re STUNNING… and double sided! Check out the pastel Morrocan Rug, which has modern B&W polka dots on the reverse side. Try the vibrant Persian Rug if you’re feeling exotic, or flip it over for a classic pale blue clover print.

Little P

If you’re all about luxurious, natural materials and good design, you’ll adore Little P’s shop. We’re already fans of their hand-tufted New Zealand wool rugs… so we were excited to see a playmat version of one of their most popular styles.

The Triangle Round Playmat is made with 100% Organic Cotton Muslin, which is soft, breathable and washable. The mats are hand screen printed and reversible – emerald green on one side, and liquorice on the other.

Use this multipurpose mat at home, at the park, to wrap baby, or as a stroller cover.
